"Responsive web design" has been added to a long list of buzz words being used in the web design industry. As a client, it can be unclear exactly what this means and whether it should be important to you. Responsive design is about much more than simply creating a "mobile-friendly version" of your entire website.

In our increasingly online world, consumers are connecting with your company on a wide variety of devices in many different environments and sizes. Their web experience goes beyond their desktop computer at work, to their mobile device on the go, to their laptop or tablet at home. Creating a seamless experience is a challenge but clients of A3 Creative Solutions know that we are experts at it.

Some of the terminology used around mobile web design can be confusing. For example, you may hear "adaptive" and "responsive" used interchangeably, however they are quite different. A responsive site is a single website that is developed to respond to all changing device viewport sizes, from large iMac screens to desktops to tablets and to mobile, providing a similar experience on all platforms. If your goal is to parallel the experience across all devices, then responsive is for you.

An adaptive site, on the other hand, is a completely separate website that is designed specifically for viewing on a mobile device or tablet. If your goal is to have your visitors' mobile experience vary widely from their desktop experience, you should consider an adaptive layout site. Keep in mind, It can be difficult and costly to transition to a responsive website from an adaptive one once your website is in place.
